How to Clean Your Infrared Sauna For the Best Home Sauna Experiences

If you’ve bought an infrared sauna, you probably did so to take care of your body and mind. But, just as your infrared sauna cares for you so you may run smoothly, you also need to take care of your infrared sauna for the same reason. Like most things in life, saunas require proper maintenance in order to keep them in tip-top shape. This means you should regularly clean and care for your sauna cabin to avoid any type of decrease in the quality of your sauna and prolong its life. Fortunately for us, sauna maintenance is pretty simple! Below are some tips and tricks to help you keep your sauna in the most pristine condition possible for the best home sauna experiences you can have!

Deep cleaning your sauna

Good news: deep cleaning a sauna is not as overwhelming as it sounds! In fact, there are about two steps that go into deep cleaning an infrared sauna: scrubbing stains and disinfecting the wood and glass. But as easy as they sound, these steps are also incredibly important! Here’s a detailed explanation of how you should be deep cleaning your sauna:

  • Use a very gentle cleaner to disinfect the wood and remove germs. You shouldn’t be drenching the wood, so be very light-handed with the amount of cleaner you are using. A good way to do this step is to lightly spray a dry towel or washcloth and thoroughly scrub the wood. Also, avoid using harsh chemicals, as it can stain and degrade the quality of the wood. Instead, stick to milder options like a gentle soap or a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, or vinegar.
  • Similar to the above step, wipe down the glass door with a disinfectant. Of course, glass isn’t porous like wood, so you don’t have to be so conscious about the amount of cleaner you’re using.
  • If there are any noticeable stains on the wood, you can lightly scrub them away with a fine-grit sandpaper. Be very gentle, and avoid doing this too often!

Sauna care

While you only need to deep clean your sauna about twice a month, there are other steps you should be taking every time you hop in your sauna in the name of sauna maintenance and upkeep. While these steps are fairly simple, they reap incredibly rewarding benefits for your sauna! Here’s what you can do before/after every session to keep your sauna in pristine condition.

  • Take a quick shower before your sauna session to wash away any dirt on your skin. This can reduce the amount of debris entering the cabin.
  • Place towels under where you’ll be sitting, including under your feet and behind your back. Not only does this cushion the seats and make them more comfortable, but it also prevents sweat, dead skin, and dirt from harming and staining the wood. Alternatively, you could purchase protective cushions and floor mats, but make sure you’re regularly taking them out of the sauna to disinfect and clean them.
  • Sweep or vacuum the sauna floor after every use. Of course, this keeps the floor clean and debris free.
  • Lastly, mold thrives in damp areas, making saunas a potential hotspot if not properly taken care of. You can avoid this by doing the following after every sauna use: remove any damp towels that are in the cabin, wipe down wet spots with a dry washcloth, and leave the sauna door open so it may air out and dry.

Cleaning and caring for your sauna is very simple but very necessary. Not only does it upkeep the beautiful look of your infrared sauna, but it also prolongs the sauna’s life and maintains its quality. So the next time you use your infrared sauna, refer back to this list to make sure you’re taking the proper steps to keep your sauna fresh and functioning so you can have only the best home sauna sessions for plenty of years to come!
