You may be unsure what to do when you’re first getting started, though, and that’s what we’re here to discuss. Getting Started

You should wait for 1-2 hours after eating before starting your first sauna session. Good times of the day to do it are early in the morning when you first get up, or directly before you go to bed. If a different time of day is more to your liking, though, there is no harm in that. Start slowly. 20-30 minutes of sauna time is recommended after you break a sweat. After you have become acclimated to the infrared heat, most users spend about 25-45 minutes for each session. If you are working on a specific goal, like trying to fend off a cold, then twice daily sessions are permissible. For the most part, you’ll want to do a session every other day or so.

 

Additional Tips

Make sure that you stay hydrated in conjunction with sauna use. You should divide your body weight by two, then drink at least that many ounces of water every day. If you’re 160 pounds, that would mean eight 10-ounce glasses of water daily. Drink water both before your sessions and after them. Fruit juice, green tea, and iced tea are also good. Stay away from sodas and alcohol.

 

You might not seem to be sweating very much during your first 2-3 sessions if you don’t have a recent history of physical activity. This will change; give it time for your body to get used to the sensations. Pay attention to your body during the first few sessions, and be sure not to overheat. If a headache develops, or if you feel queasy or lightheaded, end the session there. It’s all about adjustment. As you gradually get used to this new process, your body temperature regulation will get better. Your amount of sweating will likely change, as will any feelings of discomfort you might have had early on.
